Given the web-site is called Flow-cam.com it would make sense to call the device Flow-cam too – no? Probably not. the first and foremost problem is there is a registered trademark device called Flowcam that looks at Algae of things. And no, I’m not posting images of the device so you can see the difference. This device is for videoing dancers, actors, musicians, even flow artists, flowcam is for pond scum and there in lay the difference.
Flow-cam does sound like Steadicam and Glide-cam and I was trying to stay away from those names, but for this site, I will admit to liking the Flow-cam name for the device. I’ve come up with several other things to call it, mood depending, but when spoken, Flow-cam is going to sound a whole lot like flowcam, so lets assume its a non-starter.
That said, on the flow side, my primary Martial Arts teacher, Frank Discussion talked a lot about flow, Sonny Umpad, called his movement form flow, I’ve trained on a martial art called Contact Flow, I’ve hung out with and videoed flow artists, so I didn’t just pick the name out of a hat. I let Roddie Louie do that. So be sure to give me the credit and Roddie the law suits.
I am reminded of the time I started making padded sticks for Sonny Umpad when I assisted him at his seminars. People at these events started referring to me as Stickman. I politely informed them, that name was taken by Jeff ‘Stickman’ Finder who has registered the name. I informed Jeff people were starting to call me Stickman and he had registered that name. I said I was aware of the problem, and I am informing folks you are the one true Stickman, but we both know how these things get started. Jeff kindly granted me the permission to call myself Mr. Soft-stick.
No doubt the flowcam folks will grant me the name Mr. Pond-scum. I’ve nothing to do with flowcam, but the Device, it sure do flow, don’t it.
