Caroline Liviakis is a dancer, choreographer, creative director of the Caroline Liviakis Dance Company, and Associate Professor of Dance at Napa Valley’s Performance College.
Her dance movement incorporates many forms with an emphasis of facial expression which made a collaboration with Gavin Impett a natural decision.
Following their respective Safehouse for the Arts residency’s they plan on continuing their collaboration by making movies with Gavin’s Device, and developing performance techniques using the Device.
I met Caroline fairly recently. We were both at a party held by Amber Steele, a Professor of Dance at Skyline College. I had hoped Amber could provide me with an intern who would carry my heavy stuff so I wouldn’t have to. As it was, Amber didn’t have any students she thought qualified to carry heavy things, Lynda, my girlfriend of 20+ years brought Caroline over to talk to me, I explained I thought her a bit to Professorial to embark on a career in carrying heavy stuff and I was lamenting that the climatic light sabre/umbrella battle in my dance piece given the deaths of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds the day before. Of course, I mused, their deaths does give a poignancy the piece previously lacked. She got the references, Star Wars, Singing in the Rain, mother/daughter relationships, that sort of thing. Who knew?
For some reason, Caroline stood there and listened as I rambled on over the next several hours. Something to do with a device that can move with dancers with a grace no other system offers. I’d only made it as far as the first show at that point, which was saved by Kalanni Hicks. I think I was able to show Caroline the video of that first performance
that night, but it turned out she is interested in making movies and is dissatisfied with the way her work shows up on camera and here we are.
